I thought Id share this...from the Sanford Health Newsletter. Well deserved, Cory! Congratulations to all of the Sanford USD Medical Center Heroes of the Month! Going the Extra Mile Cory Lee Diedrich saw an opportunity to Improve the Human Condition for individuals with physical disabilities in the Sioux Falls area and made it happen. He definitely went the extra mile plus and extra 80 miles. On August 16, Cory volunteered his time, loaned out his kayaks and drove to Yankton to provide 3 individuals with spinal cord injuries an opportunity to paddle on the Missouri River for their first time, during the kayak Fun Run Race at Yankton River Boat days. Cory was not planning on participating in the event but when he heard that 3 local individuals with physical disabilities wanted to engage in this event, that was not specific to individuals with disabilities, he change his plans to make this dream come true for them. Cory made arrangements for experienced kayakers, along with himself, to provide guidance to these individuals during the event. This was not the first time Cory went beyond basic courtesy. Cory took the initiative to contact one of Sanfords physical therapists and asked if we were interested in kayaking. If Cory would not have made that first phone call, the Sanford Adaptive Sports program would not have offered adaptive kayaking to individuals in Sioux Falls. In addition to Yankton River Boat Days, Cory has assisted with coordinating and implementing 3 adaptive paddling events. The events have helped provide an increase in socialization, physical activity, self-esteem and improved quality of life for the participants as well as the volunteers. He has really gone the extra mile. Cory was not asked to volunteer. He saw the potential to offer his personal hobby to individuals that may not have otherwise had the opportunity. He stepped forward to make it happen. He has assisted over 25 individuals with physical disabilities experience freedom on the water alongside of their family and friends. Submitted by Lisa Klein
