I thought you folk might like to know that I am currently taking Kirkus Reviews to task (“Mr. Domino” email: indie@kirkus) for listing and cross-referencing my novel The Kestrel Waters in the category of Fantasy & Science Fiction. It belongs to neither genre and will not appeal primarily to fans of either of those genres. This book does have implications of magical realism, but–if the book is read carefully–there is the distinct implication that these may be hallucinations or religious “visions” being experienced. So it is also not really a “supernatural” novel as indicated in the opening line of the review. Nothing in the story is any more supernatural or overtly fantasy than Cormac McCarthy’s Outer Dark or Davis Grubb’s The Night Of The Hunter. The Kestrel Waters is literary fiction, with traces of Southern Gothic. It belongs in the category “Fiction & Literature”. It has already proven to be a story whose audience and strong appeal is with readers who read literary and commercial fiction, not fantasy or science fiction. If you have read The Kestrel Waters and feel like backing me up on this, let Kirkus Reviews know how you feel. You can make a difference and I would greatly appreciate your endorsement of this important classification for this novel. RT randythornhorn/wrong-category-at-kirkus/
