I told you all Id give you an update on what happened with the social worker, so here it is: On Monday, I scheduled to have an appointment with both a social worker and a counselor who specialized in HIV-related mental health treatment. I met with both of them at once to find that the counselor was mostly just dropping in to assist with the preliminary aspects of my treatment paperwork (so I can get financial aid/medication assistance from the government and other places for the speciality clinic here in Austin.) After about a half-hour, the counselor left, though I did schedule a follow-up with her for next Friday. So... what did the social worker and I spend two-and-a-half-hours doing? Paperwork. Dear God. I have NEVER in my ENTIRE life filed out SO much paperwork. Halfway through my signature was starting to get shaky, but the point in taking so much time in doing it was to expedite treatment. N (my social worker) said that by filling out paperwork beforehand, we could expedite an intake appointment to do a broad sweep of bloodwork. Basically put: were getting treatments weeks ahead of time by doing this than if Id gone in myself and did it. Im extremely glad I decided to have her help me--because not only will she be helping me get in to see a specialty doctor sooner, but shell also be accompanying me to appointments. Shell be going with me to my intake appointment to take notes, as she said the visit can be a bit overwhelming. Though a fairly simple visit, it was a much-needed and very necessary one.
