I took a calculated risk in the set I performed last night for my guest spot at Comedy Cafe Milwaukee. It had really killed Wednesday night at Karma Bar and Grill, but it was a charged topic that was sure to elicit strong reactions. Some people loved it, some really didnt. I dont regret trying, but Im pretty sure I would have gotten a better response from the audience as a whole if Id have gone with a safer set of material. My main mistake, I think, was plunging right into divisive jokes without first warming the audience up and giving them time to build a little trust in me. Thats a hard thing to do in five minutes. Lessons learned: Watch your audience closely, try to get a feel for their makeup before going on stage. Save riskier, edgier material until later in your set to give your audience time to get to know you. Thanks to Greg Bach for hosting, and congrats to Matt Werner on his great guest spot.
