I tried to post this incredible scene from a street flooding after a tropical storm yesterday. But the script without these pictures appeared at my posting from yesterday. You can never take anything for granted here in Addis. Sometimes things work efficiently, but often if one does not have a dogged determination and even an iron will, even the simplest of tasks could be daunting. The people here, even those in power seem to accept with resignation that extreme patience is needed if one is ever to succeed. The rythm and pace of life here is different and for somebody who has lived in the west for decades it can be frustrating. But it is also not hard to see that in spite of the annoying bureaucracy, the unreliable internet and the frustrating traffic a lot could be done as seen from the endless building, road, railway and other robust indicators of an effective economy. Ethiopians live a rather philosophic life of incessant complaining and dogged determination as well as hope. Because they all face similar hardships the level of generosity they show towards each other and towards the abjectly poor to whom they open their purses and share their food tell me that even the new generation is not too far off from the old. The flood seen below occurred at a major intersection near the national theater after a sudden flash flood. No accidents occurred even when it seemed some of the smaller cars were taking in water.
