I try and watch Oscar Awards function every year. When you take into account the number of countries that the TV telecast of the ceremony reaches, Oscars are by far the most watched movie-related event every year. For all the fanfare that it attracts, let’s accept it, Oscars are almost entirely about Hollywood. I’m saying this even after taking into consideration the fact that Hollywood has become more democratic in the recent years and more and more foreign language actors/ directors/technicians are working in Hollywood and are getting nominations and awards. So, when it comes to presenting, promoting and celebrating World Cinema, nothing comes close to the Cannes Film Festival. The only factor that works against activities at Cannes from reaching out to bigger audiences could be the language (French). Now in its 67th edition, CFF is on till the 24th of May. If you ask me, it is Cannes…the place to be :) This year is special as it is 20 years since one of my favourite films, Pulp Fiction, won the top prize at Cannes.
