Here is some information that will be helpful: A squawk is the way that the air traffic controller identifies aircraft. Every transponder-capable airplane is assigned a squawk number. 7500 indicates a high jacking. 7700 indicates an emergency. Otis is an Air National Guard unit out of Massachusetts. “Real world” means that it is not an exercise for training purposes. The term “traffic” refers simply to other planes in the vicinity. TRACON stands for Terminal Radar Approach Control. Herndon refers to Herndon Center in Virginia (Air Traffic Control) ACARS stands for Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System. “Clear to drop” refers to air traffic control giving military aircraft permission to fly where needed. DACOS is Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff. “Z” refers to Zulu Time Zone given that communications cross time zones.. ELT refers to the Emergency Locator Transmitter; which is a type of distress beacon used in aircraft. DVFR is Defense Visual Flight Rules. It refers to one type of flight plan that must be filed for operation within an Air Defense Identification Zone. LAT LONG refers to latitude and longitude (obviously). DSN stands for Defense Switched Network. ID Tech – Their job in a crisis is to facilitate communications between NEADS, the civilian FAA, and other military commands, gathering whatever information they can and sending it up the chain. ADF means Automatic Direction Finder IDENT is a confirmation button on an aircraft that confirms their squawk code (see above). Mode 3 – refers to aircraft transponder status.
