I used to speak a lot about mental illness in the past but recently I have shied away from the topic. Not because I feel any less strongly about people getting the medication/therapy they need or raising public awareness of what people with mental illnesses go through, but because I feel hypocritical talking about such things publicly. I havent been doing what I need to do to maintain my health. I can give you an entire list of justifications for why but thats all they are. Me finding reasons to not do what I know I need to do. There are many out there who do the same thing. I dont have the time/money for medication/therapy even though there are organizations like NAMI who help people find mental health centers that can provide scaling cost or even free care. I dont want to deal with the side effects of the medication even though finding the type and dosage of medication that has the least side effects/most benefits can be done by having honest and open dialogues with your doctor. I dont want to rely on pills just to feel normal this one is the one that keeps most people from getting the help they need. Would you refuse insulin if you had Diabetes? Would you refuse antibiotics if you had a viral infection? Not all mental illnesses require medication but even when they do, its not anything to be ashamed of. I wont go into my own reasons for why I have allowed myself to spiral like I have because that isnt what this post is about. Its a warning. I know what its like to sit there and justify your reasoning even though you know its wrong. I know what its like to lie to yourself as your condition deteriorates, to make excuse after excuse. Theres an old saying Compassion is not wanting people to suffer the way you have When it comes to this topic, Im one of the most compassionate people you will ever meet. If you know that you need medication and/or therapy, go out and get it. If you think that you might need medication and/or therapy, go to NAMI.org and find a mental health center near you. Just... please dont make the same mistakes I have.
