I voted in support of the Bipartisan Budget Act. While this deal does not include everything I would like it to, it is a step in the right direction and reduces the deficit and does not raise taxes. It helps provide relief for MacDill AFB and other domestic priorities in central Florida facing across-the-board sequester cuts. We haven’t passed a budget in five years. We need to stop the destructive cycle of governing crisis-to-crisis and we need to provide certainty to families and businesses across Florida and the country. Ultimately, we need to make serious changes to the way we spend the taxpayer’s money. This budget is a step toward that goal. I hope that in the coming months the government will adopt a zero-based budgeting system that looks at every department and agency to identify effectiveness and efficiency of all spending items so that we never have to be back at this crisis point.
