Paul McCartney wrote the song while playing his father Jim’s piano. It’s a beautifully simple song recorded in three takes with only his voice as he’s playing the famous Lady Madonna piano at the Abbey Road studio. He shared “I remember once an Irish woman wished me well by saying, ‘I wish you a good death’ and I said, ‘Say what?’ I thought about it later and actually it’s a great thing to wish someone. I thought, ‘Well, what would I like?’ And so Paul McCartney decided to write a song about how he would like to celebrate his own life. “It’d be kind of good for people to … celebrate your life rather than sit around moaning. It’s something I don’t really think about too much. I’m too busy living. I just enjoy what I do and get on with it.”
