I voted no on the Nugent of FL Amendment 1 to #HR4487, which prohibits members of Congress from using their office budget to lease a vehicle. My office does not lease a vehicle, but for some members a leased vehicle may be the most cost-effective way of traveling through their district. Some members in especially rural districts report needing a more rugged vehicle than is otherwise available to them to travel to some of the most remote parts. Others suggest that leasing a vehicle is more efficient than seeking reimbursements for wear and mileage on their personal cars or routinely renting vehicles for short periods of time (which this amendment does not prohibit). Regardless, how a member of Congress spends his or her office budget is publicly disclosed, and constituents can evaluate their own member according to the particular circumstances of the district. The amendment was not agreed to 196-221.
