I want to debunk one annoying myth today. Usually, when someone says they have an ulcer, the ignorantly blissful rush to their home-schooled psychology degrees and confidently diagnose the person as being stressed. Oh dear! An ulcer means a sore/wound/crater/kidonda. This wound is a result of the bacteria known as helicobacter attacking the stomach lining and causing acidic imbalance of varying degrees, depending on the person. The stomach falls under parts in the digestive system, not the skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous or reproductive systems. The spread of this bacteria is through poor sanitation and poorly cooked meals which would explain why I, personally, ONLY get infected whenever I am in Kenya for more than a few weeks. An ulcer, along with stomach cancer are both caused by this same bacteria but stomach cancer is extremely rare unless an immediate family member has had the cancer. Im on day one of medication; it takes seven days of a combination of medications to kill the bacteria. Stress management is fine and dandy but not a killer of bacteria. LOL. So, no more Kawangware samosas and no more Westlands kebabs. Just for these home experts, cardiovascular diseases are hypotension, hypertension, angina, stroke, heart attack, etc. Mental illnesses are depression, schizophrenia, alzheimers, etc. Point: Stress cannot magically create bacteria in the stomach! Sigh. Now, seeing as my blood pressure is perfect, I work out, rarely drink, dont smoke and eat better than most people I know, I would politely suggest people observe their own lifestyles before offering a diagnosis and advice on mine and others. My expressive nature and emotions would most likely kill me slower than your excess belly fat and sedentary lifestyle. Knowledge is power. Elimu ni nguvu. Save yourself.
