I want to start by writing how truly devastated I was to learn the other day that scientists are now speculating that the average lifespan for a Moluccan cockatoo in captivity is now as short as 10 years. I now operate a rescue for abused and neglected parrots called “Pink Pearl’s Parrot Rescue” (Federal Tax ID#46-4794769) out of my home and this is Pearl’s story. We are not incriminating breeders nor pet stores for having parrots in captivity, when in fact, my husband, Kurt and I support and volunteer on a regular basis to guide individuals and families who have the hospitality to share their homes with one of God’s most intelligent creatures. Please read on: 1) What if your world was wiped out by predators and you were forced to attempt to survive amongst them without your native friends and family to protect and guide you for as long as you could possibly co-exist with them? 2) What if you were hatched in the loving hands of someone who loved you and nurtured you only to be sold into slavery when you were just 6 months old so they could provide for their own family? 3) What if for 15 years you managed to hold onto your life as your new owners slowly watched you self-destruct to the point that you could no longer care for yourself properly, no longer bathe, no longer eat the foods that you craved and that were required to sustain your existence within their environment? 4) Lastly, what if the only valid scientific data about your species was last documented in 1973 by one of the few ornithologists that had studied your kind in the wild before it was destroyed by the same predators that were now keeping you caged up like a wild animal while you lived in seclusion? This is just a brief summary of what the ongoing series of The Diary of Pink Pearl, A Birds Eye View books are all about. They are about giving an exotic, intelligent, misunderstood parrot her freedom again so that instead of forcing her to accept the rules that were so neatly typed out in the thank you note that was written in her words, she is given the once in a lifetime opportunity to teach others how to thrive and be happy, healthy and loved.
