I want to word this carefully as there seems to be a huge misunderstanding. When I write that humans can and very well could ‘wake up’ to a different experience in this world, I am talking about my definition of the phrase ‘wake up’ not your definition. Those of you who meditate and do yoga, pray and sing hymns, go on pilgrimages, ingest ayahuasca, make sacrifices, may very well be doing so to wake up in your own way, spiritually and metaphysically, however you define it. What I am discussing, and please read this carefully, is a process of awakening that is exactly like the transition between the experience of dreaming when you are asleep, and the experience of ‘reality’ when you are awake. When you wake up from a dream you do not need to do yoga, meditate, or anything else. You simply have to shift from one level of conscious awareness to another. Someone coming into the room in which you are sleeping and simply saying “wake up’ can do this. It is not spiritual, it is a physical experience. I am a neuroscientist, I have been since I graduated college in 1984. To a neuroscientist, this ‘waking up’ is not spiritual, it is physical. I guess I often forget that I am writing to people who believe they have 5-6 senses, to people who think that after coffee is as far as they can wake up during the day, people that spiritualize enlightenment and classify it as some kind of religious or transcendent experience. It is fine to do so, that is your definition. Mine definition is different. If you want to know about this physical awakening, consider that I study it. I appreciate any comments and suggestions about this study, but please read what I wrote above and recognize that I may not be referring to your definitions.
