I wanted to share the Story of Lucy because it needs to be heard - TopicsExpress

I wanted to share the Story of Lucy because it needs to be heard and I hope no one will ever have to endure this kind of lies and pain again. The Breeder told me that Lucy was a Happy cat but that it changed when she was around a year. She became terrified of people and was always hiding even the little things like using the litterbox or coming out of her hiding place for a bit of food was hard for her. she told me several times that Lucy was hiding upstairs under the bed. I asked many times if something happened to explain her behavior because it’s hard to believe that a cat who is happy became so terrified of people suddenly. The breeder told me that she didn’t know why Lucy became such a scared and unhappy cat. I asked her if she went to the vet with Lucy because Ii thought maybe there was something wrong with her or she was sick that could explain the change in behavior but she told me more than once that that wasn’t the case. Annemiek Font Freide traveled to Scotland to pick up the cats Lucy and Spotty. After that weekend she told me that she was home in Breda and the next day my husband and me could travel to Breda to pick up Lucy and Spotty. And so we did. Miss Font Freide did everything in her power to make the cats feel at home. They were in a different room with toys, water, food & scratching poles. (21th of April) Lucy was so scared she didn’t want to eat or drink and she didn’t want to be touched. Miss Font Freide gave her something to hide in so she wouldn’t feel so scared. (22Th of April) The next day we arrived at the house of Miss Font Freide and we were going to see the cats. We entered the room and Spotty looked very happy, she made a purr sound and she pressed her body to my hand for cuddles. Nothing could have prepared us for seeing Lucy. She was in her hiding hole and she just stared into nothing with big eyes, she was so terrified she didn’t move or make a sound she just stared and made herself invisible. When Miss Font Freide took her from out of there she would press her head down and her ears were flat to her head. She was so terrified of people that she didn’t even want to look at us. We didn’t want to give her more stress so we put her and spotty in a carrier and travelled back home. We knew before that Lucy was a scared cat so when she arrived and didn’t move much and had her ears down we thought that she was just scared because she was in a new home and in a new environment. She would hide under the bed and at night she would come out when we were asleep and then she would eat and drink as much as possible. (I saw her a couple of times when she thought I was sleeping) so the week after they came I took some cardboard paper and some tape and made sure she couldn’t hide under the bed anymore. Her coat was dull and her nails were so long that they almost grew into her skin. I didn’t want to bother her in the first week but I had to clip her nails before they would grow into her skin. She didn’t even want to look at me she didn’t hiss or anything, she just let it happen. It was like she was a stuffed animal with big eyes. The days went by and both Spotty and Lucy were eating very very much. Before sleeping at night I would give them a huge bowl of Almo nature dryfood and 2 cans of wetfood and in the morning this was all gone. The days went by and Lucy was still acting strange and she was sleeping a huge part of the time. I could only see her move at night for using the litter box and eating and drinking. She always did everything on the litterbox she didn’t even once had an accident. When the second week was there I tried to get a response out of her with snacks and toys but she only looked at me with those big eyes and she didn’t respond. It didn’t matter what toy I got or what kind of treat she just looked at me with eyes flat to her head. On 9/05/2014 she was still sleeping a big part of the time and we went to see our vet. He examined her and saw that she had severe fever and decided to take some blood and do a blood test to see what was wrong. The bloodtest shows that she had a large inflammation and that she had it for a long time. We were in shock because the breeder told me that Lucy was fine health wise and she didn’t know what caused her behavior. When I told her the results of the blood test she told us that Lucy was healthy when she left and that the inflammation happened when she was in our care. I showed her the results from the blood and the vets documents so she could see what happened, but she kept saying that it was our fault. We were disappointed because we didn’t pay for a sick cat. We knew that she was a scared cat but she did everything to ensure us before we got her that Lucy didn’t want to be in such a big group of cats and she was healthy. When I asked her if she was willing to pay a part of the vet bills she said that she didn’t have the money and that she wasn’t willing to pay a thing and she was very rude to us even when our vet emailed her the blood results and his opinion. I was angry because we thought we bought 2 healthy cats from an official breeder. Now one was sick and she didn’t make an effort to help us. Lucy got medicine for a week and after that I went to work with her. She was still scared but she didn’t act like she was a stuffed animal anymore. She would move her head and she responded when I talked to her. I worked with her every day and by accident I found out that in the evening she was more active. I explained Lucy her behavior and her story to an cat behaviorist and she told me that it was possible that Lucy swapped day and night time and that I could build up a bond with her during the evenings. So I spend many nights up with Lucy and we bonded and she was responding and opening up to me. A few months later she was a different cat. She was in our group of animals (spotty and 2 Maine Coon boys & 2 dogs) and she was eating well and happy, She even went outside in our enclosed garden after a while. But that all changed a few months later again She was acting all sick again and losing weight. The vet thought that she had cat flu. She had a runny nose and runny eyes and a fever and she didn’t want to eat. She got medicine for 10 days and they told me that if she didn’t want to eat we had to force her to eat because a cat can’t live without eating, she could die from that. We had a serious job ahead because we had to steam her twice a day to get her nose cleared again so she could smell the food and then she would eat again and we had to force-feed her till she would eat again. We tried everything she liked and offered her many things a day so she would eat again, but she didn’t want to eat. After a few days it looked like the medicine didn’t work and we went back and got different kinds of medicine, even some to bring her appetite back. But that all didn’t work. We went to the Vet with Lucy last night. They first tested for FIV which came back negative. During the exam they noticed blood in the eyes and a white sheen on them. She also had a very high fever and kept losing weight. After the bloodtest it showed very high inflammation values and most other things were also off. So the combination of having no reserves left to fight anything, the blood values, the fever and the fact that she already had antibiotics that didnt work meant it was too much for her to survive. With a very heavy heart we did the humane thing and let her go. The vet suspects dry FIP and there is no cure for that. She most likely got it from the breeder because there were signs in April in the bloodworks that she was sick. All this time I didn’t even once get an email or message from her breeder how Lucy was doing. The last thing she heard was that Lucy was sick (End of April). But she not even once made an effort to contact us. We emailed her several times that we didn’t had a pedigree for both Nebelung cats (Spotty & Lucy) but till today we never got any of them. Lucy is not with us anymore. We are the ones feeling the pain of her loss. We are the ones grieving for her. It is not fair that this burden is ours to bear without any communication with or compassion from the breeder. We were only allowed to have a few months to enjoy our sweet Lucy, but it was still worth it to us. She felt our love and knew that she could trust us. Finally after all her time she found a home where she could get a happy life filled with love and attention, even if it was for just a short time. Sweet Lucy we miss you so much
