I wanted to update everyone regarding some budget concerns at the State level. The Governor has recommended that money be swept from the Kansas Endowment for Youth fund. This will not impact us today but could affect us in the future if the funds are completely swept now. Funding for Infant Toddler Services is not being cut at this time, however we need every legislator in the county to know who we are and what we do. These funding issues will finally be decided by the legislature and many of its members do not even know about us. I ask that you contact your legislator this month and let them know the importance of early intervention services. They all return to Topeka in January and that is a very busy time for them so now is the time to talk. A few facts that you can share with them: -Infant Toddler Services is not allowed to have a waiting list. Every child that is referred needs to be screened or evaluated to see if he/she qualifies for early intervention services. -Infant Toddler Services goal is to build parent and caregivers capacity to enhance their childs development during routines and activities in a natural environment like home, community or child care setting. We teach parents how to promote development. -Over 1500 children in Johnson County are receiving early intervention services. Our referrals are up 11% in 2014. -Approximately 25% of the children seen at ITSJC, do not go on to receive special education services once they reach age 3. If you are a parent, please include a story about how ITSJC has impacted you and your childs life. As the session begins in January, if there are other issues that may affect us, I will be sending out more emails to inform every one of the help we need. I thank you for your continued support of ITSJC.
