I was a poor student in school; I did as little as possible and only applied myself around April when the final exams were approaching. I would like to take this opportunity to thank President Barrack Obama, Vice-President Joseph Biden, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House of Represenitive Nancy Pelosi and other liberal Democrats for finally awaking me. Approximately three years ago, for the first time, I read the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Amendments, in their entirety. I just purchased a book by Robert Middlekauff, entitled “The Glorious Cause,” the American Revolution, 1763-1789. I will begin reading this as soon as I finish “D-Day” by Stephen E. Ambrose. I make every effort to respect other viewpoints and not to force my ideology onto others, but I feel it’s important for every American to understand how this nation came into existence and the sacrifices that were made to give us our freedoms that, today, many take for granted. During our nearly 250 years of our history, we have made many mistakes such as the treatment of the American Indians and slavery. Unlike other nations, that has been around for thousands of years, we Americans have moved forward in our attempts to make a more perfect union. In my humble opinion if you are not protective or even aware of what you have it will be taken away from you while you sleep. Not only while you may be sleeping, but it appears to me that our present leadership is slowly removing our freedoms while we are awake and smiling. I don’t know who said “The greatest threat to freedom is freedom itself.” I think what that quote is saying, freedom is taken for granted and it will always be there. All we have to do is wake up in the morning and the sun will be shining down on our great country. Nothing can be further from reality. Freedom must be protected thru vigilance and commitment. Our Constitution is not only the most revered document in the world, it’s also considered by our enemies as the most hated. For as long as there are free people pursuing their God given rights that our founding fathers recognized and made reference to in the Declaration and Constitution we must maintain and ongoing awareness. Two individuals from different times and cultures made reference to America not being protective of its rights. John Adams said “Remember democracy never last long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” Nikita Khrushchev was more eloquent when he said, “I once said we will bury you and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you.” The real danger to our freedom is not from outside, it’s from within and it may be you and I. Know who we are, where we came from and where we may be heading. Just my opinion, and I approve of this message.
