I was able to get a rare view of the Union Pacific Railroads famed 844 steam locomotive pulling a freight car consist on Aug. 31, 1989, on the outskirts of Marysville, Kan. No. 844 was en route to the fourth annual Topeka Railroad Days Festival. Unfortunately, 844, two tender cars and two support cars were cut off from the freight cars on the west side of the Big Blue River bridge before entering town for a service stop. I was unable to watch the trains departure. Im unsure if it left that same day or remained in Marysville overnight. Perhaps other railfans may have information regarding 844s status the remainder of the trip to Topeka and the return run to Cheyenne. Did it continue to pull freight cars during the entire journey? Im one of those who would still like to see the locomotive and its tender in the gray and black color scheme. (Photos by Larry Byers)
