I was at Starbucks. Two women, carrying their drinks, were walking toward where I was sitting. The first woman was blond, trim, age about 20, wearing very short shorts and a very small tank top. The second woman looked a little younger than the first one, but otherwise could have almost been her clone. They were speaking to each other in Russian. As they saw me, the older of the two said to her friend, “Почему он здесь? Разве это не место для красивых людей в Америке?” She then slowed her pace, and, turning her face a fraction of an inch in my direction, she said, “Вы не понимаете ни слова, что я говорю не так ли?” She and her friend looked at me out of the corners of their eyes, laughing, and continued walking. Before they were out of hearing range, I said “Нет. Ни слова.” They looked at me, their jaws gaped and their eyes opened wide. They hurried away. As they rounded the corner as fast as they could go without breaking into a mortified run, I said, “до свидания. Хорошо бы поговорить с вами.” They continued walking quickly away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Loose Translation: As they saw me, the older of the two said to her friend, “What is he doing here? Isnt this the place for the beautiful people in America?” She then slowed her pace, and, turning her face a fraction of an inch in my direction, she said, “You dont understand a word Im saying, do you?” She and her friend looked at me out of the corners of their eyes, laughing, and continued walking. Before they were out of hearing range, I said “No. Not a word.” They looked at me, their jaws gaped and their eyes opened wide. They hurried away. As they rounded the corner as fast as they could go without breaking into a mortified run, I said, “Goodbye. It was nice talking with you.” They continued walking quickly away.
