I was born and lived my childhood in Queens, NY. I remember a youth there with theater, museums, people watching at parks, the NYC Library, concerts, dining and dance. I remember taking people up to the World Trade Center observatory and the look in their eyes when they looked out onto my city. I remember the feeling when someone who took your breath away with their profile against the skyline and she turned from the view, looked at me, and we both smiled in the knowledge of shared appreciation. There are so many Americans who have sacrificed themselves in defense of their countrymen. Complete strangers, lives given up for people who they knew nothing about except allegiance to words scribbled on paper over two hundred years ago. I support the ones who have been willing to do so on foreign soil even though there were no guarantees that they would succeed or assure innocents went unharmed. I am glad that we can sometimes instead put down people planning to attack us with a ship or an airplane, because it greatly increases the survival of our troops. I also support the use of drones, because we dont have to worry about the risk to a pilot, they can get closer, and are therefore less likely to harm innocents. From the soldier, to the airplane, to the drone, none guarantee success or that innocents would go unharmed. However, if in the insertion and extraction of soldiers you risk more innocents, then we should be glad we can use drones instead. Drones, missiles, and other technology are not the problem, its the failure to apply war power correctly that should preoccupy progressives. The terrorists in Syria are as dangerous to the world as Osama was in Afghanistan before 9/11. The internal bickering of the American family under this President should not be misunderstood by those who are planning harm to us or our friends. Without guarantees of success, any assurance that we would be able to leave quickly, or naïveté that this would end all wars we united behind FDR to confront the threat posed by the radical threat of Nazism. Without these guarantees, assurances, or naïveté about terrorism we are uniting now to confront the threat of ISIL and groups like it.
