I was called out by my brother, Matt Copus (via Briana Eddington), to complete the #ALSicebucketchallenge. As my part, I have chosen to make a monetary donation directly to the ALS Association in memory of those who have lost the fight, in support of those who are still fighting, and in hopes that in the future, a cure will be found. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, with its namesake coming from one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game, Lou Gehrig. In the summer of 1938, at the age of 36, the man once known as The Iron Horse for his strength and durability was forced to retire prematurely due to the debilitating effects of the illness. He passed away just two years later. Rather than posting a video of myself dumping ice water over my head, Id like to share another video. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Lou Gehrigs Farewell Address, one of the most iconic speeches ever in sports, if not history altogether. While complete archival footage does not exist, this season, Major League Baseball compiled a tribute video, which Ive attached, featuring original Gehrig snippets beautifully woven together with clips of modern day first basemen reciting his words. I would like to directly challenge Corey Leichty, Kevin Beach, Nick Herrmann, Mark Miller, and Clayton Alan Acheson to make an ice bucket video, a donation, or if they so choose, both. Id also like to indirectly challenge anyone taking the time to read this fully to share this status, and do the same.
