I was diagnosed with MS at the age of nineteen. It was with the help of modern medicine and treatment that I was able to walk and use my hands again, and for that I am thankful. I was then told that in order to have a half way normal life I needed to have a daily injection to prevent another attack from occurring. I took my neurologist word for it and spent six months in so much pain I couldnt stand to be touched half the time. This led to me leaving my job and sleeping close to twelve hours a day. Then I stopped taking the injections. I was able to get out of bed in the mornings, work, and feel like a normal person. I never meant to stop completely, but after I saw what it was doing to me I never took it again. Come to find out my neurologist failed to inform me that chemo was in these injections. He was never open to my suggestions of alternative medicine, and even tried to proscribe me depression medication for pain that had no correlation to depression. It has been almost six years now with no attacks, no conventional medication of any kind, and no regrets for listening to what my body was telling me. With that said, I have been on both sides. I have seen how far modern medicine has come and how it has helped me, but I have also seen how detrimental it was to my life to question my doctor, his ethics, and the few options he gave me. That is the single best decision of my life thus far. I encourage everyone to question and challenge what we are told and the options that are given to us!
