I was getting a ride home earlier and, about four blocks from my house, I noticed a loose dog in danger of going into traffic. So I thanked Mary for the ride and hopped out. I thought it was the next door neighbors dog, Duke. I pursue. After tromping over a couple lawns and shouting to him a few times, he finally notices me and I notice not-Dukes actual owners looking distraught; shouting for Jake to return to their backyard. I start mashing facial expressions together and sprinkling in some raised hands with shoulder shrugs in a way that, I felt, expressed seriously I know what this looks like, but Im not going to steal your dog. As Im miming my innocence to the lady across the street, Jake comes and sits by me. Now with my innocence still in question, I felt that petting Jake would really get it through to her... a black van without license plates and with tinted windows was not going to roll up. After she approached me she said wow! You must be a really good person. Jake always knows.... always. He wouldnt have came to you or sat, he would have just attacked you. I then aired the misunderstanding to her and left. While walking home I couldnt help but wonder what exactly is in a dogs criteria for being a good person?
