I was going to finish Obsession yesterday. I had such good intentions! And we know about those. A few days ago I thought I’d just touch up a few spots on my kitchen cabinets. I had some stain in the basement left by the previous owner that I assumed was for the cabinets. I’ve used it a couple of times to touch up a spot on a window sill or facing. So I dabbed a few spots here and there and thought it looked pretty good but there were lots more spots than I’d first thought and the knobs were looking really pitiful. They were white with a bit of brass in the middle except most of the brass was gray. I decided I needed different knobs. With 48 knobs in the kitchen (I have a big kitchen), that was a lot of white spots. So I ordered more knobs and went to the hardware store and bought a small sander and did some work on the cabinets, just sanding where there was a stain or bad spot. When I got home yesterday from Matts, I decided to just slop a little stain on all the cabinets. Cover up all the imperfections. I did so. But then noticed that the stuff didn’t seem to be drying. It stayed shiny. Finally at that point I looked at the can which identified the stain as “gloss.” My kitchen was very, very shiny. So I got on the Internet and found that MinWax makes a stain, Polyshades, to go over old stain and sort of blend with it. Took me 3 stores to find it (finally found it at Wal-Mart) and then I couldn’t find the same color, so I got a shade darker, Natural Oak. And I got it in “satin,” hoping it would mute the “gloss.” Came home and saw that my last holdout neighbor was raking the leaves from his front yard and only mine was covered with leaves. So I stopped and raked 6 very packed bags of leaves. It got dark while I was doing this, but I have a street light and lights on my garage and porch, so I finished everything except the other side of the driveway, just a small strip, which has no light. Then I came in and coated my cabinets with the new stain. And it worked! They look great! MinWax Polyshades is my new best friend! Then I cleaned up the kitchen and mopped the floor, made some hot cocoa mix I had a recipe for, but it was awful, so I had ice cream and went to bed at midnight. Today I am finishing that blasted book!!
