I was halfway through my Quick Two Egg breakfast at IHOP… when they came in… a young couple, mid to late 30’s… She was dressed to impress… beautiful summer colors… it was obvious she was putting her best foot forward… he much less so… wrinkled khakis… work boots… and a rough-dried T-shirt… from the moment they sat down she leaned forward… smiling… open… trying to engage him in some way… she commented… on the beauty of the morning… made suggestions from the menu… all of which he ignored… even waving her away dismissively once or twice… never making eye contact… or responding to her efforts… for 15 minutes or more… she tried and tried again to gain his attention… but his body language was closed… and he looked everywhere but at her… he rose to use the Men’s room after a while… and when he was gone… she sighed deeply… and I saw tears well up in her eyes… it took all the restraint I could muster… not to go over to her… and tell her to leave… let him go… move on… life is much too short… to waste on someone who doesn’t “hear” you… doesn’t “get” you… doesn’t even “see” you…
