I was having a heated debate of the weekend about the costs of the winter olympics here in Vancouver and I thought Id start a thread here and see what every else thinks. My belief was that not only was it a great event but it funded a lot of things we are still using today. Now that Ive given you my bias Ill show you why I think that is. A lot of is all new stuff Ive looked at today and the discussion was about costs so I did some digging. Some key notes to start with: A final audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers released in December 2010 revealed total operation cost to have been $1.84 billion and came in on budget resulting in neither surplus nor deficit. Construction of venues also came on budget with a total cost of $603 million. PricewaterhouseCoopers study estimated a total contribution to the BC economy of $2.5 billion of Gross Domestic Product, and as well created 45,000 jobs and contributed an additional $463 million to the tourism industry while venue construction by VANOC and 3rd parties added $1.22 billion to the economy. Keep in mind this seems to be just the olympics operating budget and not things related to the olympics like security and facility upgrades. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics#Financials If we look at the total cost associated with the olympics it seems to be more around $6.4 billion but that isnt simply what the government paid or anything: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics Included in the total US$6.4 billion cost are the $1 billion for security, $2.5 billion for transportation extensions and upgrades, and $900 million for the new Vancouver Convention Centre (An additional $554 million was spent by the city including a portion on the Olympic Village). To me the biggest takeaway from this seems to be that we got $2.5 billion for transportation extensions and upgrades, and $900 million for the new Vancouver Convention Centre and Construction of venues also came on budget with a total cost of $603 million And assuming the costs of olympics wiki page is correct, for a total taxpayer contribution of $925 million. See to me that seems like the people paid 925 million and received 4 billions worth of things were still using today. Id love to hear every ones opinions on this.
