I was just in Kroger, going through the line. I noticed that the lady checking me out was someone who had been very salty, even though every single timeI encountered her I tried to thaw her out with kindness and conversation, to no avail. Jesus whispered to me, try again, Rachel, this time, Rachel. So I struck up another convo with her, calling her by the name on her tag. Turns out her family is in Italy but she cannot go because she cant afford it and because she takes care of her daughter, Melissa, that has a brain injury due to a motorcycle accident. It hit me with a fury, this woman wasnt spiteful or mean because she wanted to be, she was, and is, carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. And I can only imagine how hard it must be to nurse your daughter everyday knowing she has a permanent brain injury. I left her line promising to pray for her daughter, Melissa. She didnt thank me for praying, (I wasnt looking for that anyhow), but she did say, thats very nice. We connected, Linda and I. And Id like to think, because of Jesus, that the conversation we just had a profound and lasting impact on her, too.
