I was just thinking about what Dr. William Cosby is facing right now. I had the opportunity to back him as a musician in 18 shows in the early 80s. He was one of the few professionals to individually talk with us before each show and thank us for making him look good in performance. Now all of these women are coming forward with accusations about events that may have happened over 40 years ago, which may or may not be true. If they are true, why did it take over 40 years for these women to come forward with the complaints? If they were not true, what could be their agenda in fabricating these stories now? I do know Dr. Cosby is standing up for rational behavior in the African-American community, and by doing so, he has ruffled a few feathers in that community. I would think that any one who was innocent would loudly defend their innocence in a case such as this one. However, I could see him not saying anything about this situation he is facing because it is like asking someone, Have you stopped beating your wife? This assumes the person is guilty, and if he is not so, saying anything at all would make no difference to the perception of the person being considered guilty or innocent. If he is guilty, he has left the person he was then and turned his life around in the last 40 years. I know how difficult it is for someone to complete an earned doctorate, especially in the field of education. Dr. Cosby has done so. He has also stood for ethical and mature life in his behavior, and in others, especially in his own race. But the lessons he teaches can be applied to all races and ethnic groups. I do hope in the future he will be addressing the accusations, but if he doesnt, that will be ok too with me. As a Christian, and especially a Lutheran Christian, I believe that atonement and forgiveness can be received by anyone. If I err in my judgment of this problem, let it be in forgiveness.
