I was looking at a beautiful picture of my best friend, Arlas - TopicsExpress

I was looking at a beautiful picture of my best friend, Arlas canned fruit and this came out of me... ... This takes me back so many years... when growing up back in the middle of the last century, we had the Fruit Room where all the canned things went... it looked much like this... with peaches, pears, plums (several varieties) and applesauce predominating.. but also berries and TONS of jams and jellies... corn, green beans and other veggies.. plus, in the back corner were the onions, potatoes, carrots and other veggies... I guess we would have been considered poor today... dont know... if we were , we never knew it... Thinking along this line... I heard my sister recently complaining that we never had any money to do anything... Funny, I never noticed that... my needs were simple, I admit... Fishhooks when it was time to fish... a box of ammunition for my rifle when it was time to hunt .. a box of shotgun shells when the quail were ready or the ducks were flying... and BBs for my BB gun at ALL times... I found out a novel thing in those days... Money didnt come by saying I need you to buy me.. It came from weeding a neighbors flowers... from climbing the oak trees and picking mistletoe until my wagon was full and then pulling said wagon house to house and offering it for sale until either the wagon was empty or I had what I needed... Did you know people will buy Daffodil bulbs I dug from along the creek bank? They bought fresh mustard greens Id picked and loaded into my wagon... the same wagon that I carried chicken manure in to sell at garden time... there were plums to pick and sell, apples and other fruits... even COMIC BOOKS sold when I needed cash for a new bicycle tire! The movie Friday night was a dime... and a dime could be had for about a half hour of shelling peas for my widow neighbor lady... I wanted some rabbits... so when we went fishing and had a banner day, I cleaned them and traded my neighbor down the road for a doe and a buck... commonly called a starter kit in min neck of the woods...
