I was never a fan of Fidel Castro, or any other communist leader, - TopicsExpress

I was never a fan of Fidel Castro, or any other communist leader, but the undeniable truth is that if not for the communist revolution Cuba would now be a wholly owned subsidiary of Capitalism, Inc…all the beachfront property snatched up by Germans and Brits and Japanese and Americans and posted “No Trespassing.” People slaving away without unions or OSHA-style protections in factories operating with no environmental controls. Horrible garish casinos, like in the days of Batista, and little family shops in the cities squeezed out for ultra-lux shopping. Poor people swept like mice out of those beautiful, shabby old colonial apartment buildings. No trace of the amazing system of free education that’s the envy of anybody who pays attention. Now that we’re reopening diplomatic relations with Cuba thats all going to happen. For years ultra right wingers like the Koch Brothers and their ilk have been slobbering over the prospect of exploiting Cuba; now they’ll be elbowing each other aside for the best spots at the trough. But it’s going to be interesting to hear what they say in public about all this since their knee-jerk reaction is to characterize everything President Obama does as the work of the Anti-Christ. It’s like that old politically incorrect joke: “Mixed feelings” is watching your mother in law drive over a cliff in your new Cadillac…
