I was on my knees in the yard digging up a few dandelions. My neighbor, the Republican, hurried up to me, and said, “What are you doing there?” I’m used to explaining simple things to this guy, so I said, “I’m digging up dandelions.” I noticed he seemed distracted, agitated, looking around apprehensively. “What’s the matter? You seem upset,” I said. “I was taking a nap in my chair after watching some Fox News on TV,” he managed to say. “I had a nightmare, or maybe I should call it a daymare. It still seems so real to me. Really spooky.” I smiled, and said, “Must have been something big and hairy planning to have you for dinner.” “Oh no,” he said, “I dreamed Congress passed Obama’s jobs plan. You know, the one that raises taxes on millionaires, and spends $447 billion on job projects, and keeps state workers, like teachers, on payrolls.” He began trembling, and I could see him reliving the horror of his dream. “Raise taxes on incomes over a million dollars!” he repeated, fighting back tears. Just then his wife came running up. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t see him leave the house. I’ll take him back inside. I thought he was asleep in his chair.” I said, “No problem. He had a nightmare.” She said, “I knew he was freaking out when he saw the IRS staff line-dancing on Fox News. Did he mention that?” “No,” I said, “It’s the cruelty to millionaires that drives him a little crazy, it seems.” “Yeah,” she says.
