I was pondering why Veteran’s Day is important. I know we are honoring all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we as America hold so dear. But I think it is also about all of us who, over the course of this great nation’s history, have offered our lives to serve something much larger than our own selfish desires. We put aside fame, fortune, the honor of others, money and safety – and most of all our lives – to protect this country and it’s citizens. That is what service is all about. Also our families have given up more than we can ever understand or imagine: moments together, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, family gathering, etc. They sacrificed their dreams, hopes and aspirations because they loved us enough to support us and let us fill the role that was laid before us. I look at today not as a day when people will thank be for what I did, but rather a day when I can say “thank you for giving me the privilege of serving you and this country”. That is my reward. So to all my friends from the various services – today I call you shipmate and say thank you for what you have given up for me.
