I was raised on just the Modern Orthodoxy Ysoscher Katz describes here. My father, Alav HaShalom, a Musmach of Rav Soloveitchik, Alav HaShalom, raised me with a sense of utter synthesis. Science, Art, Opera, Philosophy, Poetry, etc... were all realms through which to attain an ever deepening knowledge of HaKadosh Baruch Hu. Growing up, I saw nitzotzot--holy sparks--everywhere, just waiting to be revealed and appreciated. Ma Rabu Maasecha Hashem was our mantra. My father regaled us with stories of his marching in the civil rights movement and sensing HaKadosh Baruch Hus presence, marching with them. When my father taught a yeshiva class halakhah or machshava, he would often bring a painting or even a movie for the class to watch to illustrate the manifestation of specific Torah values. To this day I find myself quoting poetry, philosophy, or theology, or referencing a meaningful folk song when I give a Dvar Torah. Yes. We need that Modern Orthodoxy that Ysoscher describes.
