I was reading edge.org and it was talking about this notion that we interact with machines so much that we begin to treat each other and our inner lives like machines. A familiar trope and hugely bold statement, but ok: let us take that as given, that the media we like to consume as a society shapes our interactions. Lets say we are the machine age. What then of the TV age? We learnt passivity, but also a sense of life escaping without us. The programs pass us by if we dont watch them. A constant fear of missing out. We learn to interpret context, and to follow. We learn to let things go. What then of books? We learn passivity again, but when a book is closed it does not continue without us. We learn perseverance. We learn to make promises. We learn to possess the things we complete.
