I was shocked at the way a bank in Chandigarh (SBI) functions. I reached there about two hours after it opened yesterday. The lady in charge of Pension Section had already left for home as “her child was not well”. The lady sitting next to the vacant chair asked me to meet “that lady at the corner. She is an officer and she can help you.” It is said about some people that you do not need enemies if you have friends like them. When I reached the “lady officer”, she was not prepared even to listen to me. Instead, she pointed out a tall man in the premises and said, “He is the chief accountant. You can approach him and he will help you”. I followed him into his cabin. He listened to me and said I should have met the lady officer. When I told him that it was she who sent me to him, he said, “Please come with me”. He took me to the same lady who shouted at him for bringing me to her. The poor man felt slighted and I told him, “Don’t worry, Sir, I will come again!” Then I approached another lady officer and requested her to let me have the details of my account. She opened my account on her computer screen and allowed me to take notes. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I have been regularly getting my monthly pension, though a very small amount. “Can I have my passbook updated?” I asked her. “Sir, please meet the manager”. I went to the same Chief Accountant who was managing the branch that day. When his effort to call a peon failed, he went to the section concerned and got the passbook updated for me. I thanked him and left, but not before hearing a young lady clerk shouting at the Chief Accountant at the top of her voice. I could only sympathize with him. Why do bank employees behave like this when they get good salaries with assured promotion?
