I was so tired when I got home from the barn yesterday that I didnt post about my rides! Some of you know that I havent really ridden since I came off of Star on June 16th and bruised my knees. I did get on Jazzy and tool around a little bit a couple of weeks ago, but it was painful so I hadnt tried again since then. At the time, I was riding bareback without a pad because I didnt own a saddle anymore. Thankfully, I met a great gal who bred her mare to my boy Farenhyte, and we were able to work out a deal on the fee so I got a nice Wintec all-purpose saddle! On Saturday, I lunged Star with the saddle and walked her through the eucalyptus grove to get her used to everything before I got up in the saddle. While I was getting ready to tack her up, Felicia and Jazzy were both in the barn aisle with us. Much to my surprise, Felicia came up to investigate the saddle pad! I took a cue from her, and flapped it around her some before sacking her out with it. She was loose, no halter or any other constraints, and she stood for all of that! Unable to resist the urge, I let Star loose for a few minutes and haltered Felicia. I put the saddle pad back on her and walked her around, and she didnt care. So, I took her to the saddle and let her smell it, then I set it on her back and was able to lead her around with it perched up there! I was very surprised, as she is generally nervous in new situations. Once the other two are WTC I am going to get on Felicia. I am going to start working her more now, though, and getting her used to working with the saddle on. Yesterday, I rode Jazzy first, and she was a bit of a pill once we left the barn area. I took her for a hand-walk through the neighborhood and she did extremely well, aside from all the stupid city folk who have infiltrated the neighborhood and now speed down the streets with no regard for hand signals or anything... Good exposure for the horse, but still not okay at all. I think, though, that Jazzy really needs to spend some time away from Felicia each day. She is just bonkers for that mare, and it is very difficult to keep her focus from her back. Felicia needs it, too, because her constant screaming for Jazzy while Im riding is not helpful! Unfortunately, yet not surprisingly, the saddle doesnt even remotely fit Jazzy, so Im still stuck riding her bareback for now. She is losing weight, but sheesh its taking for ever! Star did really well in her first ride with a saddle. She was definitely unsure about posting the trot, though, despite the fact Ive done it numerous times bareback. Toward the end of our ride she was starting to get it, though, so a couple more rides and I think well be golden. She did fabulously walking through the eucalyptus grove, too, and even jumped a fallen branch! I think we could be ready to hit the real trails very soon (Kellie, Tiffany, and Tera)! youtu.be/2lnb9fUs8Zc
