I was talking to someone online the other night who encouraged me to share my health story about one of our AKK. We got Bucky as a retiree about 5 years ago …. Anyways, he had a lump on one side that I had the vet check out - about 2-3 years ago. The vet immediately took a needle aspiration and came back in the room with bad news. Buck had a mast cell tumor. Of course we had them do surgery ASAP. The margins were clean but only by about 1-2mm - so we had a second surgery done by an excellent surgeon under the care of a vet that sees primarily cancer patients. This surgery was more invasive - but was done to make sure there wasnt anything missed…. and the margins again were clean but I think the amount was more like 10mm…. (this was over about 2 mo) About a month later, I found 2 other little lumps on his other side and had them checked out; one was nothing but the second was another mast cell tumor. So again, Bucky had surgery done by the surgeon with excellent results. I was wondering if this was a recurrence and they said no since the lumps were in such different spots (both on his sides) . What we decided to do was have Buck see an acupuncturist who also uses Eastern meds. He now takes Natural Paths Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang which are herbal, but a very fine powder. He also takes Thornes Myco-Immune dietary supplement which are drops from many different types of mushrooms; they dont make the canine version anymore but the human version is the same. I truly believe that these, and the acupuncture have saved him. He is now 11+ years old and doing great. Oh - and after surgery - he was groggy due to anesthesia but then was wanting to jump around the next day!
