I wasnt bullied at school. I always had a lot of friends, but church was never an emotionally safe place for me. I became one of those kids who tried too hard to fit in. My bullies were at church. I was taunted and ridiculed. I was called fat and ugly, would never amount to anything, and that I would grow up to be a lesbian. Church became the last place I wanted to be. As a teenager,I rebelled against anything that had to do with what my parents had taught me. It all seemed hypocritical to me at the time. Gratefully, I had an amazing mother,good friends, and some other wonderful leaders who were great examples of courage and faith. I eventually came back to the principles I had been taught. There were a few others in my home ward who went through similar experiences. Most have utilized their agency and have not returned back to the Gospel. We need to educate others regarding bullying. It affects a childs self esteem a great deal. The last place it should be happening is at church!
