I wasnt going to bother doing a post referring to my last shift at the fire service, hoping to just slope off into the sunset without much fuss, but I have realised that I cant go without saying a few words. When I think about my nearly 17 years in the brigade there is a phrase that sums it up, the opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The best of times: I have worked with so many brilliantly fantastic professional and dedicated people and shared so many great memories, some of which will live with me forever. We have had many laughs and tears along the way but through it all we have provided the community and our firefighters with a truly exceptional service for which I am very proud to have been a part of. I have made friends for life and have gained a wonderful and beautiful wife. I have worked with so many great people that it would take me ages to list them all here. The worst of times: well I think this speaks for itself. The past 2 years have been hard on us all with this hanging over us but I think we have all coped really well, sticking together whether we have decided to make the transfer or move on to pastures new. The lack of support from certain people (I wont list them but could, I will save that for another day maybe) has not helped but I wont dwell on that. Plus the whole thing has really been very unnecessary. Myself: Well I will take a little time out and watch the World Cup without fear of missing a game and I will complete my second novel (nearly finished). I will look for another job shortly, take a holiday later in the year and see what fate and the winds blow my way. Good luck to you all in your new jobs and retirements. It has been a privilege and an honour working with you all. I have no regrets. John
