I wasnt going to say anything until teachers salaries came up, but - TopicsExpress

I wasnt going to say anything until teachers salaries came up, but just to add my two cents to Julia Koviak-Janikulas thread (who blocked me so I cant comment), I would like to add this: My daughter is a teacher at PGHS and there is so much going on behind the scenes that people do not realize that teachers put into their jobs. They DO NOT work a 40 hour work week and work 9 months of the year. They work at a minimum a 60 hour work week, at the sacrifice of their own families (in my daughters case her twin 2 1/2 year old children) and putting her job first and putting in a lot more time and effort than is seen at the forefront and that someone not involved in education does not see. I see her anxiety because she feels she cannot give her family the attention they need. I see everyone helping and chipping in to make it work so my daughter can continue to be the great teacher that she is,and she IS an awesome teacher. So I resent anyone saying that teachers make more than they should. They should get paid more. If they charged per hour for what they worked vs. what they get paid, it is not much above minimum wage. Walk a mile in their shoes then come back and make that statement. As a bus driver, when your hours are over they are over. You go home and that is the end of your day. You dont work all day, go home and grade papers and plan lessons until 11:00 at night so that children get a top notch education. You dont spend your weekends (unpaid) making sure all your bases are covered so your students get the best education that they can at the expense of spending time with your family. And PG IS a top notch school district in this area. Test scores have proved it. But it is because of the teachers. Yes, Julia & Sharon were great bus drivers. I remember them from when my daughter went to school. But did they go to school for 6 years and earn a degree with the student loans, etc. that are still being paid off to earn probably less money than they did? Do they work from 7:30 AM until 10-11 PM 9 months of the year? I dont think they did. Also about the combination Director of Facilities and Transportation; that is two huge jobs thrown into one. I worked at MPC for years and saw what the Facilities Director did. And that was at one school, not 6. I cant imagine the pressure and stress of that job. I dont know how many people do unless youve been there and have seen done it. All I am asking is that everyone look at it realistically and be fair. And thank you Ray Bethke for trying to throw some common sense in there. Or at least trying to because your questions are not being answered from what I see. Sorry for jumping on a soap box folks, but this thread hit a nerve.....as you can tell!
