Unreal; Im truly disgusted by this. This is a very old commercial for the very first baby that survived captive breeding at $ea World; her real name was Kalina, her mother is/was Katina, and her father a male named Winston. (NOT Tilikum, the famous boy who was involved with the death of a trainer there in 2010). In this video, youll see Baby Shamu swimming happily beside who I presume is her mother....her mother whose dorsal fin is collapsing. Now, Im not an expert on Orcas (yet), but Im told this can be a sign of premature aging due to stress, and this mother whale was not that old. Tilikum, the large male whale whos had a bit of trouble with humans in the past, also has a collapsed dorsal fin, indicating stress and premature aging. What could these factors POSSIBLY be caused by? You and I both know the answer; captivity! Although theyre relatively young whales (compared to their wild cousins), theyre already showing signs of poor health and less-than-happy emotional states. Why did it take the film Blackfish to point out that these animals ALSO suffer from the same ailments WE do when under pressure or just depressed. And notice that the ailments are most noticeable in the whales who were captured and brought to the parks, i.e. Katina in Iceland, and Tilikum in Washington State, I believe, although I may be wrong. The whales BORN into this life seem to have it a little easier since theyve never known their natural heritage, and have no memories of the family members their parents were ripped away from. This is no coincidence, and it sickens me. How DARE these jerks think that this is in ANY way, shape, or form....acceptable morally? IT IS NOT! This ad was created in 1985; Katina shouldnt have been too terribly old then. Why is she showing signs of unhappiness and less than great health?
