I watched Edge of Tomorrow / Live Die Repeat on bluray earlier - TopicsExpress

I watched Edge of Tomorrow / Live Die Repeat on bluray earlier this week and was pleasantly impressed.....I love it when that happens so I felt I owed the flick a small review on here. Its a sci-fi action thriller starring Tom Cruise. I want to make a joke about him agreeing with an interviewer that playing the role was as hazardous as serving in Afghanistan but my dark humor bone is too weak on Christmas. In the movie Cruise plays a rockstar officer who normally serves as a spokesperson for the army (with no combat experience whatsoever) who gets demoted to private by a general (played very awesomely by Brendan Gleeson from 28 Days Later) who wants to give him the combat experience he thinks he should have. Cruises character heads to the frontline of a war where humanity is battling aliens who landed on Earth from an asteroid that landed in France. This means he has to storm the beach of Normandy (of course) with a bunch of ragtag infantrymen and women. Needless to say it becomes a slaughter (what a coincidence!) and Cruise gets infected by one of the aliens with the same condition Bill Murray had on Groundhog Day. No joke....he literally has to relive the invasion of Normandy again and again until he figures a way out of the situation (hence Live, Die, Repeat which renaming the film that for its bluray/DVD release was a marketing decision made because of how poorly the film did in theaters.) It sorta rips off the mechanic from Groundhog Day.......but with the scenario being focused on a soldier storming the beaches of Normandy to stop an alien invasion and not a reporter traveling to Punxsutawney, PA to film a groundhog it feels more like someone excelling at playing a video game rather than someone just learning to be a better person. Even though Cruises character does that too (sorry I forgot his characters name). Its an intriguing watch even though it is a used concept. It has plenty of special effects and fight scenes that are impressive by todays standards. If you get this bluray/DVD in your stocking dont fret because its worth the watch.....even though its not as hazardous as watching someone serve in Afghanistan. (Doh! I couldnt help myself! ;-) )
