I watched Room 237 last night. Intriguing look at the meaning behind Stanley Kubricks film The Shining. I dont usually let my mind get wrapped up in conspiracy theories but I must admit I found the premise oddly plausible. When I was a wee lass I fell head over heels for Stanley Kubricks work- 2001, Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket etc. I wanted to watch all of his movies. I decided before I watched the Shining I would read the book first, to really gain an understanding of the story on a deeper level. I liked the book ok enough and couldnt wait to see the film. After I watched the movie I was dumbfounded! What did I just see? The film was nothing like the book. The film also seemed to lack a sense of awe and sheer brilliance that Kubricks other movies had consistently provided. I wrote it off as probably just a dud- it can happen to the best of us, right? After seeing this documentary I am certain The Shining was not a dud. Im not sure I grasp the meaning of the film in its entirety but I now have a greater respect for Kubrick than I have ever had before- the man was a genius. His work is the closest to mastering perfection in the arts that I have ever seen. Up there with Da Vinci imho :-) So what do you think The Shining was really about?
