I watched Snowpiercer last night on Netflix, the allegorical dystopian film by the Korean director Bong Joon-ho. Id heard from a friend that he had enjoyed it so took the leap of faith that it takes for me to watch a film like this. Plus, I just thought it a kind of show of solidarity with a South Korean re: film and freedom of expression if our intelligence community is to be believed and that countrys neighbor to the north is truly responsible for the Sony computer hack. I have my doubts about that since trusting the intelligence community at this point in our countrys history takes an even bigger suspension of disbelief than watching a movie does. But thats for another post. I loved the film with all its jarring changes of moods and pacing. It takes a deft hand to render a comic tone along with so much violence and despair. It was, yes, quite a ride. Sometimes a silly one. Other times a disturbing one. But never a boring one. I know Patricia Arquette and Emma Stone are the frontrunners for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar this year. But I hope those who do the nominating have not forgotten Tilda Swinton in this movie when the nominations in that category are announced. She is sublime in this film as she captures all its moods and tones in her remarkable performance.
