I watched a fascinating program the other night about A.J. Goddard and his wife, two of the toughest 19th-century people of whom youve probably never heard. These two and a few helpers literally hauled all the pieces for a steamship over the mountains of Alaska during the Yukon Gold Rush. That meant multiple trips up the so-called Golden Stairs. (In reality, thousands of steps chipped out of the ice and snow up the side of the mountain.) Having survived that incredible ordeal, they then had to put the boat together on the icy shore of Dawson in time for spring. Then had to successfully steer it through the treacherous river bends down to the gold fields. They made enough money to call it a day and retired to Seattle.
