I watched the 2.5 hour version of Kenneth Lonergans Margaret last night. The films realism left me often annoyed and enraged by various characters, particularly the main character, the teenager Lisa, played by Anna Paquin. And yet Lonergans attempt to depict how difficult it is to be aware of the enormity of what’s going on all around you every minute resonated enough with me that Im planning to watch the 3 hour version, which I hope brings some much-needed coherence to the latter half of the movie. Will the longer version be an American masterpiece, as some critics say? Im willing to put in the time to find out.
