I will be a proud mother on Saturday when my daughter graduates - TopicsExpress

I will be a proud mother on Saturday when my daughter graduates with an advanced diploma and honors. I want all of my friends who are teachers and administrators to know that I love and appreciate you. I do not, however, appreciate a school counselor calling my home late morning on June 2nd to say that because my daughter transferred to her current school in 2011, she must take two standardized tests to fulfill the requirements for an advanced diploma. The school wants her to take an SOL (appropriate acronym) for Algebra 1, which she took in 8th grade, and geometry which she took in 9th. There was even talk about her taking a World Geography SOL, which she took in 7th grade. She graduates on June 7th...this Saturday coming at 10 a.m. *insert cricket chirps here* Why in the world should my child be penalized for the counselors recent discoveries? How about in 2011 when there were more than 4 days before graduation? 2012? Last month? No. I was told about the state policies that must be fulfilled, but when I asked about student and parents rights, and policies on timeliness in communication and accountability, again nothing. Like my grandmother would say, you could hear a mouse peeing on cotton in that room. This is beyond unfair, and fits into a constant theme of non-communication. Needless to say, formal complaints have been filed and she now only has to take one test instead of two. What if I wasnt able to be an involved parent and she wasnt a young person of grace and compassion? She would be walking with a regular diploma despite all her hard work. Some of our children have PTSD from simply attempting to live.
