Feel free to use my comments, provided below…... SUBJECT: Red Light Cameras Chairman Shickle & Supervisor Hess: I see there is a Joint Meeting of the Code & Ordinance and Public Safety Committee scheduled this week. A topic for discussion is the installation of photo-monitoring (Red Light Cameras) at up to seven intersections across the County. I am very skeptical of the use of Red-Light Cameras for several reasons. Have you identified a problem or is this a proposal in search of an application? Is a private firm/contractor offering this as a service? I am concerned about the surveillance aspect of this system. It seems to be yet another broach of our 4th Amendment rights. If this is to be used as an automated traffic enforcement mechanism, then I would expect to see a reduction in the manpower/funding to the Sheriff’s Office. I have read studies that characterize this type of surveillance system as a revenue generating scheme, with no real benefit to public safety traffic enforcement. It has been reported that these systems have actually increase rear-end collisions at the intersections where installed.
