I woke up this morning hoping the news about Castro (a young musician) and his girlfriend was a dream or even false. But sadly, it looks increasingly evident that they are indeed dead. What annoys me most is the fact that their deaths could have been avoided. Again, another consequence of the national culture of gross disregard for Health and Safety. Do Ghanaians value their lives? It will be pointless to isolate and demonise the resort for its poor and criminal safety practice because Health and Safety is generally non existent in every facet of the country. This is not the first, and I have a feeling it will not be the last of needless deaths in the country. Many more are happening as we speak; deaths through Road Traffic Accidents, deaths through absence of Occupational Safety and Health at work, deaths through poor hospital management and doctor negligence, deaths through aggression etc In the absence of a pragmatic health and safety law in Ghana, we lack the framework for any meaningful guidance and practice. As a matter of urgency, government must enact the Health and Safety law and commence on an effort to establish a national safety culture. rapidgh.org
