I would like to debunk the popular myth that obtaining Social Security Disability is as easy as applying. The hard truth is that 95% are denied on initial application. That improves to 75% denial at reconsideration. If you take your disability case all the way to an ALJ hearing, your chances of success are, on average, 51%. Not exactly free money, and the wait time for an ALJ hearing in Hartford is 330 days from denial of reconsideration. That means you have now been out of work, without funds for close to two years. Some Judges now have approval rates as low as 21%. Free money it is not, and it is a sobering, degrading process.
